Retinitis pigmentosa disease treatment in India is a search that often begins after a diagnosis of night blindness and shrinking side vision. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited condition, and most forms have no cure today. What helps is early diagnosis, regular monitoring, treating complications, low vision support and, where suitable, access to properly approved research. This guide explains the facts and how to assess any treatment offer.

Quick Navigation

What Is Retinitis Pigmentosa?

RP is a group of inherited disorders in which the retina’s rod cells, and later the cone cells, gradually stop working. It is caused by changes in any of more than 100 genes and may be inherited in dominant, recessive or X-linked patterns, or occur without a known family history. Many people also have associated conditions such as Usher syndrome, which affects hearing as well.

Common Symptoms

  • difficulty seeing in dim light or at night
  • gradual narrowing of the visual field, often called tunnel vision
  • glare sensitivity and slow adjustment between light and dark
  • reduced central vision and colour vision in later stages

Onset and speed of change differ widely, so each person’s outlook is individual.

Diagnosis

  • dilated retinal examination and imaging, including OCT
  • visual field testing
  • electroretinography (ERG), which measures retinal function
  • genetic testing and genetic counselling for the patient and relatives

A genetic report matters because a small number of gene-specific therapies and many research trials depend on it.

Established Care in India

  • Regular follow-up with a retina specialist.
  • Treating complications: cataract surgery when the lens clouds, and treatment of macular swelling when present.
  • Low vision services: magnifiers, lighting, contrast aids, screen-reading software and mobility training.
  • Eye protection from strong light as advised by your doctor.
  • Supplements: evidence is limited, so discuss any vitamin use with your specialist first.
  • Genetic counselling for family planning.

A gene therapy exists for one rare form of RP-type disease linked to the RPE65 gene and is approved in some countries. Whether you qualify, and whether it can be accessed from India, should be confirmed with a retina specialist after genetic testing.

Established Care vs Investigational Treatment

Category Status What it involves
Diagnosis, imaging, ERG and genetic testing Standard of care Retinal imaging, visual fields, genetic counselling
Cataract surgery, macular swelling treatment, low vision rehabilitation Standard of care Regular follow-up with a retina specialist
Gene therapy for specific genes (such as RPE65) Approved in some countries; confirm availability in India Needs genetic confirmation and specialist assessment
Stem cell therapy for RP Investigational. Permitted only within approved clinical research Research on stem cell-derived retinal cells and protective factors

Stem Cell Research in RP

Researchers are studying stem cell-derived retinal cells and mesenchymal stem cells that may release protective factors. Studies are mostly small and early, and results to date do not show a proven cure or a reliable way to restore lost vision. In India, using stem cells for RP is classified as investigational under the ICMR-DBT National Guidelines for Stem Cell Research, 2017, meaning it should take place within approved clinical research. The Health Ministry’s September 2026 advisory also reiterates that routine use is limited to approved indications.

Safety Matters in the Eye

Eye procedures can cause infection, bleeding, retinal detachment, raised eye pressure or permanent loss of vision. Serious harm has been reported after unregulated stem cell injections into the eye. Only agree to a procedure that is part of an approved protocol, performed by a qualified eye surgeon, with ethics committee approval and written informed consent.

Questions to Ask Before You Decide

  • Which approved indication or registered trial covers my type of RP?
  • Can you show the registration on CTRI and the ethics approval?
  • Who performs the procedure, and what are the risks?
  • How will results be measured, and by whom?
  • What is included in the cost, in writing?

Be cautious of “cure” claims, guaranteed vision improvement or quoted success rates, and keep your own retina specialist informed.

Cost and Planning

Costs in India are generally lower than in many Western countries, but differ with tests, protocol, number of visits and travel. Ask for an itemised written estimate and avoid large advance payments without documents.
