Night Blindness Diagnosis & Treatment in Kenya

‘Night blindness’ sounds like a diagnosis, but it isn’t one — it’s a symptom, and a fairly vague one at that, since it can point to almost anything from a nutritional gap to the earliest sign of a degenerating retina. For a patient in Kenya, sorting out which of those it actually is matters enormously, because the two ends of that spectrum couldn’t be further apart in terms of seriousness.
That’s why the very first thing we do isn’t reassurance and isn’t alarm — it’s testing, aimed squarely at working out which category a particular patient’s symptom actually belongs to before anything else is discussed.

    Ocular Symptoms

The most common complaint is a lag in how quickly the eyes adjust moving from a bright space into a dim one — people describe struggling to recognise faces once the light drops at dusk, or feeling increasingly unsafe driving or walking after dark. Glare from oncoming headlights at night is another frequent complaint, often described as sharper or more uncomfortable than it used to feel.

    Underlying Causes

Worldwide, a shortage of vitamin A remains the single most common cause of night blindness — and thankfully, also the most fixable, usually confirmed with a simple blood test. Set nutrition aside, though, and the same symptom can stem from congenital stationary night blindness, which doesn’t get worse over time, from early retinitis pigmentosa, which does, or from a dense cataract or high myopia affecting the peripheral retina. Each of those roads leads somewhere very different, which is exactly why identifying the cause matters as much as addressing the symptom itself.

    Diagnosis for Kenyan Patients

Dark adaptometry tells us, quite precisely, how long the eyes take to recover sensitivity after bright light exposure — often the clearest single way to separate a nutritional cause from a retinal one. We add electroretinography to test rod function directly, check a serum vitamin A level, and take a careful history: a symptom that’s held steady over time points away from a progressive retinal disease, while one that’s clearly getting worse points toward it.

    Treatment Approach in India

Where vitamin A deficiency turns out to be the cause, correcting it through supplementation and dietary changes is usually all that’s needed, and we make sure families understand this plainly so nobody walks away assuming something worse than what’s actually happening. If testing instead points to genuine retinal degeneration, we manage the case in line with whatever dystrophy is behind it, and only then does regenerative stem cell therapy enter the conversation as a supportive option.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does struggling to see at night automatically mean something serious?

“No, not automatically. A large share of these cases, especially where diet has been limited, trace back to low vitamin A — something that responds well once it’s corrected. Testing is what separates those more straightforward cases from ones that genuinely warrant closer retinal follow-up.”

If it turns out to be vitamin A deficiency, will my night vision come back?

In most cases, yes — night vision tends to improve once vitamin A levels return to normal, provided the deficiency is caught and treated before any lasting retinal damage sets in.”

At what age should we get a child’s night-vision trouble checked?

“There’s no age threshold to wait for. If a child is having difficulty in dim light — clumsiness or bumping into things at dusk, for instance — it’s worth getting checked promptly, since both the nutritional and inherited causes respond better the earlier they’re caught.”

Is it really necessary to travel abroad just to check for a vitamin deficiency?

“Not usually — a basic vitamin A blood test can typically be arranged within Kenya first. Travel becomes more relevant if that result comes back normal, or if the overall symptom pattern points toward an underlying retinal issue needing imaging and electrophysiology testing that isn’t available locally.”
