Alongside legitimate research, a number of private clinics around the world — including in India and elsewhere — market “stem cell therapy” for RP directly to patients, often at high cost, without regulatory approval and without publishing peer-reviewed evidence of safety or effectiveness. Regulatory and medical bodies have repeatedly cautioned against this:
- The US FDA has issued public warnings about unapproved stem cell products, including several cases where unregulated retinal stem cell injections caused severe, irreversible vision loss and even blindness.
- The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), along with the Department of Biotechnology, has published national guidelines stating that stem cell therapy for retinal disease remains investigational and should only be administered within approved clinical trials, not as a routine commercial treatment.
- Reputable ophthalmology bodies advise patients to be wary of any clinic promising “guaranteed” vision improvement through stem cells outside of a registered trial.
If you’re considering stem cell therapy, the safest path is enrollment in a registered clinical trial (searchable on public trial registries) under the supervision of an academic medical center — not a direct-to-consumer clinic.
What You Can Do Today
While a cure isn’t available yet, there are evidence-based steps that can help manage RP:

- Low-vision rehabilitation and assistive technology
- Vitamin A palmitate supplementation, in some cases, under medical supervision, based on older clinical trial data — not a stem cell approach, but an evidence-informed option to discuss with your doctor
- Genetic testing and counseling, since RP has many genetic subtypes, some of which are now eligible for approved gene therapy (for example, voretigene neparvovec for RPE65-related retinal dystrophy)
- Staying connected to a specialist retina center so you’re informed as new trials open up
